Caye Caulker Humane Society Breaks Ground on New Construction

So – finally after months of fundraising we received the all clear to start building from the CBA (Central Building Authority) and the Caye Caulker Village Council, so we broke ground on 6th April 2024.

A day that will be etched in our minds!

new permanent home

In case you haven’t heard, we have been asked to move as our current rented location is actually straddling two property lots.

We had anticipated this to an extent and we had started to put away funding for when the time came but suddenly the time is upon us and we needed a lot more money than we had first envisaged!  Of course!

At this time we also thought it was time for a permanent home for the CCHS, not a rented place where we would be moved on as property prices rise along with rents on this amazing gem of an island.

We successfully managed to negotiate with our landlord the purchase of a 100 year lease on the land we are half on.  That should be enough to keep future generations of islanders in animal healthcare.

So we planned a building that could multi-purpose.

The Plan

The new building can house a vet or other full time staff when needed, have space for more clinical needs like X ray and ultrasound and still provide weekly free clinics.

On top of this we want to provide some more services and involve more local young people, so we are hoping to start a dog boarding facility and a dog training unit and add to our grooming services with Pampered Paws of San Pedro.

Breaking Ground

We have the septic and soakaway, the pilings are pounded, the beam and slab on the ground floor poured and posts for the 1st floor are all completed and this week we hope to pour the floor of that 1st floor!  Then walls!!  Can’t wait!!!

So watch this space – this is what it looks like today and this is what we hope it will look like in a few short months!

Thanks to everyone for the support – and remember we aren’t quite there yet!

We still need to get moved in and get the furnishings sorted out.

If you can help, here is the QR code and LINK FOR DONATIONS again.

giving back

While some may prefer to stay anonymous, we also want to offer something back to everyone who makes donations;

  • $1,000 – we will plant and name a tree of your choice
  • $5,000 – we will honour you on our Wall of Fame near the entrance.
  • $10,000 – we will name a kennel after you.
  • $25,000 – we will name the building after you.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

The Caye Caulker Humane Society Team
