A Story Of Survival Against The Odds
The first time Miss Griselle brought Lucky to the clinic at the Caye Caulker Humane Society she was very sick. So sick that we didn’t think Lucky could survive. Underweight, wormy, and too young to be away from the mother dog. In addition, she was the only one of nine puppies in her litter still alive.
But Lucky is a fighter and her sweet human Miss G took care of her 24/7, from feeding her from a syringe to showering her with love. We all became invested in Lucky’s wellbeing and every week Miss G would bring her to the clinic at the Caye Caulker Humane Society so we could check her out and make sure she was on track.
Miss G is young and had no experience in taking care of a sick puppy, but she believed her girl could get through this. With this kind of loving commitment, there was no going back!
Over the weeks Lucky put on weight, started to eat hard food and became a ‘normal’ pup! What a delight and a sweet sweet pooch. Lots of wags and hugs from her every visit.
Just as we thought we were out of the woods Lucky had a falling accident and badly injured her hip.
The injury was more than we are able to take care of at the Caye Caulker Humane Society, so Lucky needed a trip to the Animal Medical Centre (AMC) in Belize City and we had to raise funds for the trip and the medical bill.
Once examined at AMC, the vets confirmed a pelvic fracture and a broken hip.
This is not minor surgery. It is quite major – especially for a 5-months old pup. The pelvic fracture will heal itself but they had to perform a femoral head ostectomy, which means they took the head off the femur (the broken up bit) and over time the end of the femur will form a hew hip structure into the socket of the hip.
Lucky lost an inch of height on that leg, so she will always have a limp. Not from pain, just from that leg being a little shorter. Much like a wonky bar stool!
As Lucky came out of the animal hospital this week after a 5-day stay, Miss G sent us this little message.
She was so so happy to see me that I started to cry. I really, really missed her and IDK [I don’t know] how to thank you. Thank you so much!
Well that’s good enough for us! Says it all!
Miss G is such a good dog mom and Lucky is such a fighter. Thanks to your donations and our volunteers’ time, the Caye Caulker Humane Society was able to help with the surgery.
We are very happy we could help with Lucky’s story of survival, as we now feel she is one of us after seeing her all these weeks and months!
Now begins the rehab and getting Lucky to walk on all four legs again. She is home with Miss G – recovering and getting all the TLC she needs!
